Obituary for James R. Ames

James R. Ames, Col. USAF (Ret.), 78, passed away on May 21, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born in Catlin, Indiana, grew up in rural Rosedale, and graduated from Rosedale High School in 1957. Upon graduation from Purdue University in 1962, he was commissioned into the United States Air Force, where he served with distinction for 24 years as a B-52 pilot. He compiled nearly 6,000 hours of flying time, in addition to earning multiple service medals. His military career culminated with an assignment in Omaha, Nebraska at Strategic Air Command headquarters. Upon retirement, he was presented with the prestigious Legion of Merit award. Following his Air Force career, Colonel Ames enjoyed a productive & fulfilling 19 years in the private sector, before ultimately retiring in 2005 to manage his farm. He was a founding member of the British Air Museum, an active contributor to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and a member of the Rosedale United Methodist Church. His other interests included reading, golf, the outdoors, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Colonel Ames was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Maxine Ames and niece, Debora Lyn Manley.

He is survived by his wife, Diana of Terre Haute, IN; sister Pat Manley (Jerry) of Rosedale, IN; daughter Dee Ann Leggett (Ted) of Huntsville, Alabama; son Jim Ames of Newburgh, Indiana; daughter Dawn Guckenberger (Ron) of Rosedale, Indiana; son John Ames (Sheila) of West Plains, Missouri; grandchildren Spencer, Jeff, Wes, Hunter, and Lexie Leggett, Kristen Ames-Stratton (Rob), Brandon, Olivia, Braden, Emilie, and Amelia Ames, Ronnie and Mallory Guckenberger, Talynn and Avery Warren, Courtney and Reagan Ames; and great grandchildren Bryce and Addilyn Stratton; nephew Mark Manley (Sharon) of Rosedale, Indiana. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Connie Van Hook Brown of Rosedale, Indiana.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 25th 2018 at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 Main Street, Rosedale, IN. Pastor John O’Neal of the Rosedale United Methodist Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm-2:00 pm in the funeral home. Colonel Ames will be laid to rest in the Rosedale Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, 14600 Weston Parkway, Cary, NC 27513.
