Obituary for William "Bill" Bush

Mayor of Bono, William “Bill” Bush passed away Thursday, April 5th at Union Hospital Clinton. Bill was born July 12, 1938 to Charley and Zula Trosper Bush in Fountain County. He was #7 of 13 children. He was raised in the Waterman Baptist Church in Lodi. He graduated from Tangier High School in 1957. Bill married Eula McGill on July 30, 1961 which started their journey in Dana. Bill and Eula have three children; Brent (friend Connie), Brenda (Brian) Harvey, and Becky (Dan) Newton.

Bill never met a stranger. He loved to talk to people. If he didn’t know someone, by the time he finished talking with them, they were friends. In July of this year he would have celebrated 60 years on the Dana Volunteer Fire Department. He held many offices locally, as well as serving as the Indiana Volunteer Fireman’s Association Dist. 11B Chairman for several years and the IVFA State Sgt. of Arms for 28 years. He proudly passed that job to his son, Brent 8 years ago. Bill’s community service also extended to the Zorah Shrine, The Masonic Lodge, The American Legion, and The Dana Clown Club. Politics were very important in his life, as he served on the Helt Township Advisory Board for more than 30 years. Bill was very proud to be a veteran of the Indiana National Guard for ten years and serve during the Bay of Pigs.
Bill was very active with his children in Boy Scouts and 4-H. He always looked after any children. For many years his family camped at the Vermillion County Fair to tend to the livestock. If anyone needed something, they came to find Bill, the biggest kid at the fair. It didn’t matter what time of day or night, Bill was there to help.

Bill retired from Hercules/AET in Terre Haute after working there for just short of 30 years which allowed him the time to enjoy life on his own schedule. He also loved sports. He was always proud to talk about playing baseball and basketball for his Tangier High School. He would get his score book out and show everyone how he made the winning free throw to take his team to the finals to win the sectionals in 1957.
He loved to tell stories of his childhood, some funny and some of how hard it was. All of which made him who he was.
Bill has 6 grandchildren: Briana (Matt) Ross, Brooke Harvey, Dustin & Darrin Newton, Logan and Nick Guinn. He loved going to sporting events to cheer for his children and grandchildren. He was the biggest fan in the stands.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters and in-laws, Butch & Vica McGill. Surviving siblings are Russell (friend, Carolyn), Irene (Richard) Omundson, Orville (friend, Teresa), Donna Sue Ellis & Raymond (Ruth Ann).

Services to celebrate Bill’s life will be 11:00 am Monday, April 9, at Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home in Dana, with the Rev. Donald Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Bono Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-7 pm Sunday at the Dana Volunteer Fire Department, where a Fireman memorial service will be conducted by the Indiana Volunteer Fireman’s Association at 6:30 pm.

Memorials should friends so desire, may be made to the Dana Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 721, Dana, IN 47847 or Dana United Methodist Church, PO Box 698, Dana, IN 47847 in his memory.
