Obituary for Margaret E. Parks

Margaret Elizabeth Monninger Parks, 94, of Hillsdale, Indiana, passed away in Clinton Gardens on August 28, 2018 after a long illness. She was born July 13, 1924, in Terre Haute, to Lillian E. McFetridge and Herbert B. Monninger. She grew up in Terre Haute and graduated from Wiley High School (1942) and Indiana State University with a BA in Art in 1946.

Margaret is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 71 years, Raymond E. Parks; daughter Joanie Rumple, son James, six grandchildren (Jayanne, Susan, Amy, Justin, Perry, and Virginia) and four great-grandchildren (Elijah, Sierra, Emily, and Jackson).

Margaret and Raymond met in speech class at Indiana State University and later married in Terre Haute in 1947. This “city girl” then moved to the countryside and created a happy and loving farm home with Raymond in the Dana-Hillsdale area where they raised their two children and later formed countless fun and warm memories with their grandchildren. Margaret was an accomplished artist and very creative in designing works of art that many in the community have enjoyed over the years, including numerous watercolor paintings and church banners. The couple share many friends in the Dana and Terre Haute area and are devoted supporters of Indiana State University, particularly the ISU basketball program as long-standing season ticket holders and attendees.

Margaret will be remembered for her cheerful, light-hearted spirit that brought joy to all who were fortunate enough to spend time with her. She was also known for her unique whistling talent.

Margaret was an active member contributing in her community and belonged to the following organizations:
1. Member of Dana United Methodist Church
2. Dana 49ers (Founding member)
3. Friends of Ernie Pyle
4. Vermillion County Historical Society
5. As You Like It
6. Tri Kappa
7. Bridge club

Services will be September 1, 2018, at Dana United Methodist Church, 260 N Linden St, Dana, Indiana, with visitation from 11 am until service time scheduled at 1 pm. We will celebrate her life with an exhibit of her many creative works of art. The Rev. Donald Graham and Rev. Leon Myers will be officiating. Burial will be in Friends Chapel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dana United Methodist Church and/or Helt Fire and Rescue (Dana Fire Department).

Online condolences may be shared at www.goochfuneralhome.com.
