Obituary for Earl R Nickelson

ROCKVILLE- Earl Robert Nickelson, 77, of Rockville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 7, 2019, at home. Earl was born on November 20th, 1941, to the late Walter and Jeanette (Biermann) Nickelson in Elgin, Illinois.

Earl attended York High School in Elmhurst. He graduated in 1959 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an electrician’s mate, serving on the USS York County during the Cuban missile crisis. After his honorable discharge in 1962, he went on to study electrical engineering at Wilbur Wright College before deciding to study for his pilot’s license instead. He earned his private (instrument rated) and commercial pilot’s license. While he never flew commercially, he was employed by United Airlines and later at air traffic control in Aurora, Illinois, where he met his wife Ellen.

On December 6th, 1969, he and Ellen Ower were married in Pleasantville, New Jersey. Earl and Ellen lived in St. Charles, Illinois, for 24 years, where they raised their two children Erik and Dawn. He was employed by AT&T as a telecommunications technician and repairman and from 1970 until retiring in 1998. Friends of Earl knew that he could never sit still and was always working on a project. He and Ellen have spent almost thirty years volunteering with various missions organizations, including JAARS (Wycliffe) and, most recently Tech Serve International, where Earl worked with electrical, carpentry, and of course telephone cable repair and phone system installations. Earl also enjoyed traveling, making E & E's pizza with Ellen, woodworking, and all sorts of do-it-yourself projects. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, always planning a special breakfast with each one when he visited. Earl was a dedicated Christian, involved in Bible studies and leadership roles in the churches he attended. Earl showed his love for God and for others by devoting his retirement years to helping people all over the country and world, in places like Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Niger, England, Cameroon, and Papua New Guinea.

Survivors include his wife Ellen, son Erik (Erin) Nickelson of Rolesville, NC, daughter Dawn (Paul) Carlson of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, brother John (Darlene) Nickelson of Palos Park, IL, brother Ralph (Iris) Nickelson of Mauston, WI, grandchildren Elsa Carlson, Marit Carlson, Bjorn Carlson, and Kristine Nickelson. He is also survived by three nephews, as well as many cousins, in-laws, and close friends.

Funeral service is on Thursday at 11:00am at Bridgeton Baptist Church. The visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8pm at Gooch Funeral Home in Rockville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tech Serve International, PO Box 598, Greenbrier, AR, 72058. Earl and Ellen have been serving with Tech Serve on many projects for over 13 years.
